Esemble Ravello Festival Il Combattimento di Tancredi & Clorinda is a part of the collection entitled "Madrigali Guerrieri et Amorosi" published in Venice in 1638, whose declared intent was to present the opposing passions of human nature. There are three passions- ire, temperance and humality - and three musical style fit to represent them: concitatio, temperato, and molle. The combat of Tancredin and Clorinda from Tasso's "Gerusalemme Liberata" could hardly have been improved on as a subject for this representation. The first performance took place in Venice in the home of Mocenigo during Carnival, 1624. The original instrumentation (which Battistelli has overlain with an elaborate instrumental and electonic texture) comprised two violins, a viola da braccio and basso continuo. |
